It’s part of a series of Massive Online Open Enrollment Courses, or MOOCs, offered by the College of Education. Professor Earns Nicotine, Tobacco Research Fellow Status Recognized as a leader in her field, the College of Education’s Lorraine Reitzel was welcomed as a 2020 Society of Research on Nicotine and Tobacco Fellow for her work to combat health disparities among traditionally underserved populations. Agent of Change: Alumnus Works to Disrupt Juvenile Incarceration Marvin Pierre, co-founder of Eight Million Stories, strives to reconnect the disconnected. His Houston-based alternative education program supports students 14 through 18 who have been incarcerated or expelled from school. A Helping Hand: Alumna Empowers Northside Community Kim Martinez, a graduate of the College’s human development and family studies program, serves as a volunteer coordinator with the nonprofit Attack Poverty, working with residents to address community needs. College of Education Earns Top Ranking from U.S. News The online master’s degree programs at the College rank among the best in the nation, according to the 2020 list from U.S. News & World Report. UH BOUNCE Expands Community Gardening to Third Ward This fall, fourth and fifth graders from Blackshear Elementary participated in BOUNCE’s Master Growers Club, an afterschool program that teaches elementary and middle school students how to garden and grow their own healthy food. Undergrad Found Right Fit at UH College of Education Emily Cortinas found her calling in human development and family studies. Due to high academic standing, she and three fellow students will lead the procession and serve as banner bearers at the 2019 fall graduation. Professor to Lead American School Health Association Clinical Assistant Professor Kayce Solari Williams was recently elected as president of ASHA. She said her top priority is advocating for policies that create healthier, more supportive environments in schools across the nation. $1.6 Million Grant Awarded for Dyslexia Support Professors Kristi Santi, Jacqueline Hawkins and Shawn Kent have teamed with other UH faculty on a federal grant to help improve outcomes for students struggling with reading. The project, Hawkins said, “gives educators a process for success.” Distinguished Alumna Leads Advocacy for Trauma Survivors “Counseling psychology superstar” Diane Elmore Borbon serves as policy director for the UCLA-Duke University National Child Traumatic Stress Network. She earned a 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award from the College for her influential work. Special Populations Ed.D. Gets $1.25 Million Boost A grant from the U.S. Department of Education will fund doctoral students seeking to become leaders in K-12 special education. The project involves professors Kristi Santi (pictured), Jacqueline Hawkins and Shawn Kent. Students Apply Classroom Lessons As Third Ward Mentors As part of professor Toya Conston’s Introduction to Educational Psychology course, students get the opportunity to mentor local middle school students. The project is supported through a grant from the UH ACES Institute.
